Children with Autism and Individuals with Mental Retardation

Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders—Autism is reflected by
difficulties with developing and understanding social relationships, language develop and communicative use of language (using words to mutually communicate with others), over-sensitivity to stimulation like clothing or certain sounds, stereotypic behaviors (rocking, hand flapping, echolalia, repetitive use of words, preoccupations with certain objects or people), self-injurious behaviors (head slapping, head banging, self-biting), and harming others (biting others).

Behavioral Interventions—The use of Applied Behavior Analysis at The
Center is designed to enhance or develop skills in social relationships and use of language, assessment and modification of the functions of self-injurious or aggressive behaviors, modification of the reasons for stereotypic behaviors, and referral to occupational or other therapies for sensory integration.

Mental Retardation is a pervasive lower capacity to learn and achieve.
Use of behavioral interventions to assist in developing language, academic, and other functional skills so that the child can develop long-term capacities for work and community living skills as adolescents and into adulthood.
